Nancy: She’d be happy! My sister is allergic to cats, dogs and whatever. So, I’m mum’s only hope of taking over the clinic which she’s so proud of, but…

Max: Don’t tell me you don’t like animals. 

Nancy: Of course, I do! But I’ve always dreamed of a career in professional sports, which can’t be combined with running a clinic! 

Max: No, it can’t!

Sally: Oh, sorry! I didn’t have my phone on me. When we got into the car to go to my grandma, I realized that I’d left it on the desk in my room but we were in such a hurry…
Alex: Oh, it’s ok. I thought there was some technical problem. Like silent mode or flat batteries. It wasn’t very important anyway.
Sally: No, the phone was ok but not next to me. And why did you call?
Alex: To remind you about our school orchestra’s concert. It starts at noon.
Sally: Oh, yes! I remember. Can I take my cousin with me?
Alex: Sure.

Seller: Hello, can I help you?
Man: Yes, I need to buy a present for my nephew.
Seller: How old is he? And what’s he interested in?
Man: He is nine. Like most boys, he likes playing with his dog, assembling Lego, drawing, lots of other things.
Seller: How about a book about searching for a lost castle?
Man: Sounds good but I gave him a book for Christmas and he wasn’t very impressed. Any other ideas?
Seller: Well, you mentioned Lego or a skateboard!
Man: He has already got both.
Seller: Then I would recommend this big set of paints.
Man: Oh, I think this one would do. I’m sure he’ll like it. Where can I pay?

Mum: What are you reading, Jeff? Is it for your Science exam?
Jeff: No, mum. Don’t worry. I’ll pass the exam. Science is easy. All you need is to understand the logics. 
Mum: When I was at school, Science was difficult for me, though I loved it. 
Jeff: You were top of the class in languages, and I’m hopeless at French. I’ve got the lowest grades. The grammar is messy and illogical.
Mum: It’s complicated, right? But not messy. You need to read more in French and you’ll like it.
Jeff: Probably. I’ve got an A in Computer Technology, by the way. 
Mum: Well done! You always get As in it! Your teacher says you’ve got a gift for computers.

Mike: Are you OK, Helen? You look tired. 
Helen: Oh, Mike! I feel exhausted. The test was difficult. 
Mike: I don’t think so. Some tasks were very easy. 
Helen: For you, not for me. All those equations and calculations are beyond my understanding. And they have nothing to do with real life. 
Mike: I can’t agree. I think Maths is very practical. The world around us exists due to mathematics laws.
Helen: OK. I don’t want to argue but I prefer ten tests in Science to one in Maths. History is awful, too. I can never remember all those dates. 
Mike: I know Science is your favourite but we can’t take tests only in our favourite subjects.

Carol: Alex, hi! 
Alex: Carol! It’s nice to see you again! 
Carol: I heard you’ve been to Australia, haven’t you?
Alex: Yes, I lived there with my parents for six months.
Carol: Sounds like a long trip! Were you parents working there?
Alex:  Yes, they still do. Dad signed a two-year contract with a construction company in Melbourne. Mum decided to stay there, too.
Carol: And you? Are you planning to live here or to go back to Australia?
Alex: I have to stay here in England with my aunt’s family. I’d like to complete my school education here and go to university in Britain. Construction engineering, like dad.

Brother: I believe this fishing rod is just what grandpa wants. Don’t you think so?
Sister: I’m not sure. He enjoys fishing, right, but grandma worries so much that he might catch a cold when he goes to the lakes and so do I. You know how careless grandpa can be. 
Brother: Yes, things like nasty weather, cold and rain can never stop him from going fishing. One day he got home absolutely frozen. His coat and sweater were wet through. 
Sister: It seems to me I know what to buy to please both grandpa and grandma! A pair of long warm rubber boots for fishermen. 
Brother: Good idea! The boots grandpa wears are not really waterproof. He needs better ones.

Mia: Hi, Jeff! Probably because it’s my birthday today. I’ve turned fifteen!
Jeff: Many happy returns! Are you having a party tonight?
Mia: No, we’ve decided to throw it some time later. My exam session started two days ago, so I’m really busy now. No time for partying. In a fortnight when the holidays start I’ll invite all my friends to a party. Will you come?
Jeff: Yes, if it is not at the weekend. I’ve already got plans for the weekends till the end of the month. 
Mia: No, no, it’s going to be on Thursday. Not Thursday next week but the Thursday after.
Jeff:  Ok. I understand.

Jill: Oh, I’m sorry, I forgot about it. Yesterday I was at the theatre with my cousin and it was such a rush! She had got last-minute tickets and…
Ben: No need to feel sorry. Did you enjoy the show?
Jill: It was wonderful! Look, I’m going to the fitness centre in an hour or so. I can take the book with me. Let’s meet up on the way there. At the bus stop, is that OK?
Ben: A bus stop? Well… I’ll be at the fitness centre today too. Let’s meet up right there.
Jill: Perfect. You can find me in the aerobics class from 4 to 5 pm.
