(3 – Not stated).

A. Alan is fond of watching movies.
B. Alan had a lot to do during the academic year.
C. The director of The Avengers is Alan’s favourite film director.
D. Alan thinks the plot of The Avengers is hard to predict.
E. Moira dislikes humorous films.
F. Alan was not impressed by the final battle scene in the film.
G. Moira has a younger brother.

Alan: Hi, Moira! Long time no see. How are you?
Moira: Oh, hi, Alan! It’s good to see you. I am fine, thank you. How about you?
Alan: I am fine too, thanks. What have you been doing recently?
Moira: Well, I’ve been catching up on some sleep lately. I feel very tired at the end of the academic year, so I do need some time to relax. What about you?
Alan: The same. Still, I have started to watch some films from my list. You know I love watching films, but I am always so busy during the academic year, I never have time to watch them all.
Moira: What is the last film you watched?
Alan: I watched «The Avengers» yesterday. Have you watched it?
Moira: No, I am afraid I haven’t. I think it is based on the Marvel comic books, am I right?
Alan: Yes, you are. It’s an action film which brings together several famous characters from these books, and these characters are played by some well-known actors.
Moira: That must be exciting indeed. Can you tell me about the film’s plot?
Alan: Well, the plot is very predictable. There is a villain who wants to take control of Earth and has an army of aliens to help him. The Avengers must stop his evil plans and save the planet.
Moira: Usually superheroes work alone. I guess it is not easy for them to work as a team.
Alan: Yes, they find that learning to work as a team is not easy, but it is the only way to save the planet. In my opinion, the main characters and the relationships between them are really convincing and more developed than in other action films. Their arguments and misunderstandings, as they try to work together, are very entertaining.
Moira: I love funny films. Is this one funny?
Alan: The script is humorous. I have never laughed so much while watching an action film. The funny scenes are very memorable, at least for me.
Moira: Does this film have any special effects?
Alan: Of course. The special effects are very impressive, and the action scenes are spectacular, especially the final battle.
Moira: I would love to see this film too. It’s not to be missed.
Alan: I can lend you my DVD if you wish. Come to my place tonight, you can have it as long as you wish. I don’t think I will watch the film again in the near future.
Moira: You’re a star, Alan! Thanks a lot. I think I will watch it with my brother. He likes such films very much. We’ll get some popcorn and imagine we’re at the cinema.
Alan: You’re always welcome, Moira. See you tonight then!

A. Alan is fond of watching movies. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Алан прямо говорит: «You know I love watching films…»

(3 – Not stated).

A. Sam is very busy this summer.
B. Sam is dreaming of travelling somewhere.
C. Emma’s course on journalism is free of charge.
D. Emma finds the course useful.
E. Sam has no questions for Emma.
F. Emma can explain some facts about journalism to Sam.
G. Sam is going to take a course on journalism as well.

Sam: Emma, hi! I haven’t seen you for ages. How are you?
Emma: Oh, hi, Sam! I am fine, thank you. How about you?
Sam: I am fine too, thanks. So, what have you been doing lately? As for me, I am so bored. Summer holidays are always a torture for me; I have nothing to do.
Emma: Oh, really? I cannot even imagine being bored in summer. I always have so many plans for my summer holidays.
Sam: Well, if you travel somewhere, then your summers must be interesting indeed. I wish I could go to Greece or Spain.
Emma: In fact, I rarely travel in summer. This summer is not an exception. Still, I am enjoying my summer holidays immensely.
Sam: So, back to my question, I really would love to know what interesting things you are up to.
Emma: Well, Sam, I am doing a course on journalism.
Sam: A course on journalism? Is there such a school in our town?
Emma: It is an online course for teenagers. There we are learning the ropes of writing articles for newspapers.
Sam: What have you learned so far?
Emma: Oh, we’ve learnt a lot already. When I look at the front page of a newspaper, I understand why it looks this way. For example, an event in or near your own country has more importance than one on the other side of the world. A faraway country with strong links to your own, like a shared language, might be an exception to the rule.
Sam: Well, that’s interesting. Let’s have a look at today’s issue of the most popular newspaper. I can’t see any important news, but there is a story about the stray cats which came back home after a year of absence. Why is it so? Can you explain it to me?
Emma: Oh, that is easy. Sometimes stories about unimportant people or animals are so moving that they can become news because they appeal to the emotions of readers. You see, it’s summer now. Most politicians are on holiday, and there is not much serious news anyway.
Sam: Are there any other interesting facts about journalism you can share with me?
Emma: I think people like you and me often forget that newspapers are primarily a business today. If people aren’t interested, the news organization will make less money from sales and advertising.
Sam: Is that the reason why newspapers publish so many celebrity gossip columns and reviews of the latest TV shows?
Emma: Yes, you are right. They may even make important stories disappear from the headlines.
Sam: Well, Emma, I think I need to find some online courses for the summer too.
Emma: That’s a great idea, Sam.

A. Sam is very busy this summer. → 2 (False).
Обоснование: Сэм прямо говорит, что ему скучно и нечем заняться: «I am so bored. Summer holidays are always a torture for me; I have nothing to do».

B. Sam is dreaming of travelling somewhere. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Сэм выражает желание поехать в Грецию или Испанию: «I wish I could go to Greece or Spain».

C. Emma’s course on journalism is free of charge. → 3 (Not stated).
Обоснование: В диалоге ничего не сказано о стоимости курса — только то, что он онлайн и предназначен для подростков.

D. Emma finds the course useful. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Эмма говорит, что узнала много нового и теперь понимает, как устроены газеты: «we’ve learnt a lot already. When I look at the front page of a newspaper, I understand why it looks this way».

E. Sam has no questions for Emma. → 2 (False).
Обоснование: Сэм задаёт Эмме несколько вопросов.

F. Emma can explain some facts about journalism to Sam. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Эмма подробно объясняет Сэму принципы работы газет (например, почему некоторые новости важнее других, как эмоции влияют на выбор материалов и т. д.).

G. Sam is going to take a course on journalism as well. → 3 (Not stated).
Обоснование: Сэм говорит, что хочет найти онлайн‑курсы на лето («I think I need to find some online courses for the summer too»), но не уточняет, что это будет именно курс по журналистике.

(3 – Not stated).

A. Jane spent a month in Italy.
B. Jane and her parents had a lazy vacation in Italy.
C. Jane knows some facts about the history of Pompeii.
D. Jane got to Pompeii by bus.
E. Jane thinks the ticket to Pompeii wasn’t expensive.
F. Jane is always lucky to have good guides.
G. Peter is going to Italy next summer.

Peter: Hi, Jane! Long time, no see! You look gorgeous – you’ve got a great tan. I bet you’ve just come back from a vacation.
Jane: Oh, hi, Peter. Yes, you’re right. I’ve just come back from Italy. I was there with my parents. I spent two wonderful weeks there.
Peter: Oh, how lucky you are! I’ve never been to Italy. Did you stay in one place, or did you travel around the country?
Jane: We travelled from city to city because my parents wanted to see as much as possible. We had a great time, but there was so much to see and do that by the end of our trip we were exhausted!
Peter: What place did you like most of all?
Jane: No doubt, it was Pompeii. Pompeii is the city that disappeared when the local volcano, Mount Vesuvius, erupted in AD 79.
Peter: Why would someone decide to build a city near a volcano?
Jane: Well, Peter, at the time, people thought the volcano was a mountain, and so no one was worried about living next to it. They didn’t realize their mistake until it exploded and volcanic ash started falling on top of the city. By then it was too late. Soon a thick layer of ash covered the houses and the people inside them.
Peter: How awful! Many people must have died in the disaster.
Jane: Well, in 1748 the buried city was found. Since then, archaeologists have uncovered about two thirds of the city. We got the train to Pompeii from the station here in Naples. It only took us half an hour.
Peter: I bet a tour to Pompeii costs a fortune.
Jane: Not really. The tickets were really cheap – only €1.80 for a single! We joined a tour group when we arrived at the entrance.
Peter: Look, Jane, how about the language barrier? You don’t speak Italian, do you?
Jane: Unfortunately, I don’t speak Italian, though I’ve always wanted to learn this beautiful language. Luckily, our guide spoke good English.
Peter: When you travel to an interesting place, much depends on your guide. Was yours good?
Jane: She was fantastic. She showed us lots of things that weren’t in the guide book, which was really good.
Peter: What did you see in Pompeii?
Jane: I saw the amphitheater, the baths, the forum, and some of the most important houses.
Peter: What did you like best about your visit?
Jane: Well, I really managed to get an insight into Roman life nearly two thousand years ago. You know I want to be a historian, so that was important for me.
Peter: I see. Thank you, Jane. You’ve made me want to go to Italy too!

A. Jane spent a month in Italy. → 2 (False).
Обоснование: Джейн говорит, что провела в Италии «two wonderful weeks» (две чудесные недели), а не месяц.

B. Jane and her parents had a lazy vacation in Italy. → 2 (False).
Обоснование: Джейн поясняет, что они активно путешествовали по городам («We travelled from city to city») и к концу поездки были измотаны («we were exhausted»), что противоречит идее «ленивого» отдыха.

C. Jane knows some facts about the history of Pompeii. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Джейн подробно рассказывает об извержении Везувия в 79 г. н. э., о том, как город был засыпан пеплом, и о его обнаружении в 1748 г. («Pompeii is the city that disappeared when the local volcano, Mount Vesuvius, erupted in AD 79…» и далее).

D. Jane got to Pompeii by bus. → 2 (False).
Обоснование: Джейн чётко говорит, что они добирались до Помпей на поезде из Неаполя: «We got the train to Pompeii from the station here in Naples».

E. Jane thinks the ticket to Pompeii wasn’t expensive. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Джейн называет цену билета («only €1.80 for a single») и прямо говорит, что билеты были очень дешёвыми: «The tickets were really cheap».

F. Jane is always lucky to have good guides. → 3 (Not stated).
Обоснование: Джейн хвалит конкретного гида в Помпее («She was fantastic»), но не утверждает, что ей всегда везёт с гидами. Это обобщение выходит за рамки текста.

G. Peter is going to Italy next summer. → 3 (Not stated).
Обоснование: Питер говорит, что рассказ Джейн вызвал у него желание поехать в Италию («You’ve made me want to go to Italy too!»), но он не заявляет о конкретных планах на следующее лето.

A. Julie has wanted to learn to draw for some time already.
B. Julie often works in summer.
C. Adam supports Julie’s intention.
D. Julie thinks it’s not necessary to learn the basics of drawing.
E. Adam dislikes abstract watercolour paintings.
F. Adam is going to accompany Julie to an art school.
G. Julie and Adam have been friends for a long time.

Adam: Hi, Julie! Long time, no see! How are things?
Julie: Oh, hi, Adam! I’m fine, thank you, and how about you?
Adam: The same. So, our summer holidays have just begun. What are you going to do this summer? Have you made any plans yet?
Julie: Well, I’m thinking of going to an art school, but I’m not sure. What do you think?
Adam: An art school? Are you interested in art? I didn’t know that.
Julie: You see, I’ve always dreamed of learning to draw, but I never had enough time to take up drawing. This summer I’m not going to work and I’ve got a lot of time on my hands, so I thought it would be a nice opportunity for me to make my childhood dream come true.
Adam: Go ahead then. What’s stopping you from doing it?
Julie: On one hand, an art school has a lot of experienced teachers who can explain to me the basics of drawing. On the other hand, an art school can turn out to be boring and rigid.
Adam: Well, you’ve definitely got a point there, Julie. Art is very personal, in my opinion. If you don’t like the teachers, or find the atmosphere there too academic, it can put you off drawing forever, and that’s not what you want.
Julie: Adam, that’s exactly what I mean. I believe art classes should encourage creativity and self-expression. At the same time, I do need some academic basics, don’t I?
Adam: I don’t know. You can start with some abstract art. It doesn’t require any formal education. I’ve seen some fluid art pictures and abstract watercolour paintings. They are awesome.
Julie: Watercolours are just not my cup of tea. I’d rather start with graphics. It doesn’t require any expensive materials. In fact, you can start with a drawing pad and some pens.
Adam: I haven’t thought about it. Watercolour and fluid art materials do cost a fortune. Well, Julie, I think you should start with some proper classes then. If I were you, I’d call several art schools to find out if they offer the first class for free. At least you would see if the school atmosphere is suitable for you.
Julie: That’s a great idea, Adam! Thank you so much for your suggestion!
Adam: If you find such a school, drop me a line and let me know about it. I may join you for your first class, if you don’t mind. Who knows? Maybe we’ll have an art exhibition for the two of us one day.
Julie: You are joking, Adam. I don’t know how to draw at all. Okay, let’s go to an art class together. We can share our impressions afterwards.

A. Julie has wanted to learn to draw for some time already. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Джули говорит: «I’ve always dreamed of learning to draw» («Я всегда мечтала научиться рисовать»), что подтверждает давнее желание.

B. Julie often works in summer. → 3 (Not stated).
Обоснование: Джули упоминает, что в это лето не будет работать («This summer I’m not going to work»), но ничего не сказано о том, работает ли она летом обычно.

C. Adam supports Julie’s intention. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Адам одобряет идею («Go ahead then»), предлагает конкретные шаги («call several art schools…»), а также выражает готовность присоединиться («I may join you for your first class»).

D. Julie thinks it’s not necessary to learn the basics of drawing. → 2 (False).
Обоснование: Джули, наоборот, признаёт необходимость основ: «I do need some academic basics, don’t I?».

E. Adam dislikes abstract watercolour paintings. → 2 (False).
Обоснование: Адам хвалит такие работы: «I’ve seen some fluid art pictures and abstract watercolour paintings. They are awesome» («Они потрясающие»).

F. Adam is going to accompany Julie to an art school. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Адам прямо предлагает: «I may join you for your first class» («Я могу пойти с тобой на первое занятие»), и Джули соглашается.

G. Julie and Adam have been friends for a long time. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Диалог начинается с фразы Адама «Long time, no see!» («Давно не виделись!»), а Джули отвечает «Oh, hi, Adam!» без дополнительных пояснений, что указывает на давнее знакомство.

A. Mia is reading an autobiographical book.
B. Mia likes to swap things with her friends.
C. The author of the book has never had a proper job.
D. The author of the book has many personal things.
E. Alex is not interested in the book.
F. Alex wants to try living without money.
G. Mia thinks the book is useful in a way.

Alex: Hi Mia, I haven’t seen you for ages. How are you?
Mia: Oh, hi, Alex. I’m fine. Thank you. How about you?
Alex: I’m okay. Thanks. I see you are reading something.
Mia: Oh, yes, I am. It’s a book, My Life Without Money by Hayden Marie Schumer. She comes from Germany and she has been living for more than 15 years without using any money. So she has described her own experience in the book.
Alex: That’s hard to believe. I don’t think it’s possible to live without any money at all. Does she explain in the book what made her give up using money?
Mia: Sure. She started it as an experiment when she set up a so called swapping circle. There people could swap things and services without using money. For instance, you can give somebody a music class, but instead of money you are paid with a second hand mixer. That started the ball rolling.
Alex: I’m not sure you can get anything this way. What if no one needs your services?
Mia: She says you are certainly able to do something that people need. She used to be a very successful psychotherapist, but she rarely trades her sessions now. When she was writing her book she was living in a student residence. There she could sleep, have a shower and use computers in return for cooking for the other students who lived there.
Alex: How very interesting. Is she trying to prove that instead of a job you hate you can do what you like and still be happy without many possessions?
Mia: Exactly. She only has some clothes and very few personal belongings, and she says she is happy.
Alex: I see. Mia, can you please lend me the book? I’d love to read it.
Mia: I think I should finish it by the end of the week. I’ll give you a call as soon as I’ve finished it so that you can borrow it.
Alex: Do you think you could live a month without any money at all?
Mia: When I’m reading the book I think it’s possible, but as soon as I put it aside I start to doubt it. I can’t imagine myself living in somebody else’s house doing services for them in return for being able to sleep in their house.
Alex: It must be very difficult to live like that. I can understand her motivation and her message, but this way of life doesn’t suit most people.
Mia: Who knows. If everybody chose to live like that, it might be possible after all. At least the book makes us think about buying fewer things.
Alex: I’m with you on that point. Look Mia, I’ve got to go. Give me a call, okay?
Mia: Alex, I promise, I will. Bye for now.

A. Mia is reading an autobiographical book. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Миа говорит, что читает книгу «My Life Without Money» Хейден Мари Шумер, в которой автор описывает собственный опыт жизни без денег более 15 лет («she has described her own experience in the book»). Это указывает на автобиографический характер книги.

B. Mia likes to swap things with her friends. → 3 (Not stated).
Обоснование: В диалоге упоминается система обмена (swapping circle), которую создала автор книги, но ничего не сказано о том, что Миа сама участвует в обмене вещами с друзьями.

C. The author of the book has never had a proper job. → 2 (False).
Обоснование: Автор книги ранее была успешным психотерапевтом («she used to be a very successful psychotherapist»), то есть имела полноценную работу.

D. The author of the book has many personal things. → 2 (False).
Обоснование: Напротив, Миа сообщает, что у автора «only some clothes and very few personal belongings» («только немного одежды и очень мало личных вещей»).

E. Alex is not interested in the book. → 2 (False).
Обоснование: Алекс просит книгу у Миа («can you please lend me the book? I’d love to read it»), что явно свидетельствует о его интересе.

F. Alex wants to try living without money. → 3 (Not stated).
Обоснование: Алекс задаёт вопрос о возможности жизни без денег («Do you think you could live a month without any money at all?»), но не заявляет о своём желании попробовать это на практике.

G. Mia thinks the book is useful in a way. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Миа отмечает, что книга заставляет задуматься о потреблении («the book makes us think about buying fewer things»), что подразумевает её определённую полезность.

A. Bella prefers fiction to non-fiction.
B. The town of Craco once was a good place to live.
C. Bella has been to Italy.
D. All ghost towns are shown to tourists.
E. One can see wild animals in some ghost towns.
F. Bella likes taking pictures of ancient ruins.
G. Jim would like to read the book about ghost towns.

Jim: Hi, Bella! Long time no see. How are you?
Bella: Oh, hi, Jim! I am fine, thank you. And you?
Jim: I am fine too, thanks. I see you’re reading a book. What is it about? Can I have a look?
Bella: Of course. It is a nonfiction book about ghost towns. I don’t like fiction, you know.
Jim: Ghost towns? That sounds interesting. What is a ghost town?
Bella: Basically, a ghost town is a town where no one lives anymore. All ghost towns were once abandoned for one reason or another.
Jim: Does the book tell its readers about those reasons?
Bella: Of course. Let’s take the Italian town of Craco. In the past, it was an important place. It had a castle, a church, a market and even a university. However, it was hit by an epidemic of plague in the seventeenth century, which killed many people. After the epidemic, another tragedy happened — there was a terrible earthquake.
Jim: How horrible!
Bella: Yes, it was horrible indeed. The locals decided that the town was a bad place to live. Most of the inhabitants of the town went to North America in search of a better life.
Jim: This is a very interesting story. Are there any tours to these ghost towns? Can tourists see them?
Bella: Some of the ghost towns are shown to tourists because they usually enjoy visiting such places. You can visit Craco, the town I’ve just told you about. However, some of these places lie in ruins.
Jim: It must be dangerous to visit them.
Bella: Then they can be, I’m sure. For example, Kolmanskop in Namibia used to be a lively mining town for diamonds. When there were no diamonds left, people left that place. Now only one or two old buildings are still standing, but sand dunes cover most of the town.
Jim: I don’t think tourists would like to see such a place.
Bella: Well, Jim, I agree with you here. The town is deserted. Only birds, hyenas, and snakes live there now.
Jim: I say, Bella, would you like to see one of those ghost towns?
Bella: Why not? You know I am fond of photography. I think I can take a lot of wonderful photos in such places.
Jim: You can make a list of the most interesting ghost towns described in the book. When you go to one of the countries where some of them are located, you can visit them.
Bella: It is a very good idea, Jim. I will certainly do it.
Jim: Can you lend me the book after you finish reading it?
Bella: Sure, I will give you a call when I am through with it.
Jim: Thank you very much, Bella.

A. Bella prefers fiction to non‑fiction. → 2 (False).
Обоснование: Белла прямо говорит: «I don’t like fiction, you know», а книга, которую она читает, — нон‑фикшн о городах‑призраках.

B. The town of Craco once was a good place to live. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Белла описывает Крако как важное место в прошлом: там были замок, церковь, рынок и даже университет («It had a castle, a church, a market and even a university»). Лишь после чумы и землетрясения город опустел.

C. Bella has been to Italy. → 3 (Not stated).
Обоснование: В диалоге упоминается итальянский город Крако, но ничего не сказано о том, что Белла лично там была.

D. All ghost towns are shown to tourists. → 2 (False).
Обоснование: Белла уточняет, что некоторые города‑призраки открыты для туристов («Some of the ghost towns are shown to tourists»), а другие лежат в руинах и, вероятно, не посещаются.

E. One can see wild animals in some ghost towns. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Белла рассказывает о Колманскопе (Намибия), где сейчас живут птицы, гиены и змеи («Only birds, hyenas, and snakes live there now»).

F. Bella likes taking pictures of ancient ruins. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Белла говорит, что увлекается фотографией («I am fond of photography») и считает, что в таких местах сможет сделать много замечательных снимков («I think I can take a lot of wonderful photos in such places»).

G. Jim would like to read the book about ghost towns. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Джим просит книгу у Беллы: «Can you lend me the book after you finish reading it?», на что она соглашается.

(3 – Not stated).

A. Chris had a relaxing holiday in Kenya.
B. Chris has visited Kenya several times.
C. Chris’s friends worked in an animal shelter in Kenya.
D. Chris is an experienced traveller.
E. Chris didn’t like any food in Kenya.
F. Chris regrets being a volunteer in Africa.
G. Amy wants to try volunteering.

Amy: Hi, Chris. Long time no see. How are you?
Chris: Oh, hi, Amy. It’s so good to see you. I came back home only yesterday.
Amy: It sounds very interesting. Did you have a holiday in some hot country? Your tan is great.
Chris: Well, I was in a very hot place. In fact, I was in Africa. Still, I wouldn’t say it was a holiday. I went to Kenya to work as a volunteer there.
Amy: Kenya? I can’t believe it. It’s so far. It’s a beautiful country, but it’s very poor. There’s really a lot for volunteers to do there. Does it mean you had a choice of what work to do when in Kenya?
Chris: Sure. One can choose to work in national parks, helping to save endangered animals, or look after orphan animals in animal shelters. There are a lot of humanitarian projects as well, and I became a part of such a project. I worked in a very poor rural school in Kenya, teaching kids to read, write, and count.
Amy: I’m so proud of you. Not many people wish to spend their gap year like that.
Chris: Well, you know, I’ve traveled a lot so far, and I’ve seen so many of the world’s famous sites. I thought it was high time for me to do something good for other people.
Amy: You were a star, Chris. Please tell me more about your volunteering experience. Were the local people friendly to you?
Chris: I must say it was quite challenging at first. I mean, the language barrier and the living conditions and the climate. However, when you get to know the people better, you understand how friendly and supportive they are and how they appreciate any help they get.
Amy: Did you have any time to have some rest? I know that Kenya has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
Chris: Of course, I had some free time. No one can work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I visited some gorgeous beaches and enjoyed snorkeling while in Kenya.
Amy: What was the food like there?
Chris: It was delicious. I enjoyed eating fresh seafood there.
Amy: Chris, I’m sure that you have wonderful memories about your time in Kenya.
Chris: You know, Amy, leaving my comfort zone was definitely good for me. I made a lot of friends among the locals and other volunteers while in Kenya. I very much miss the kids I taught there as well. I’ll never forget my time there.
Amy: Well, maybe I should apply for some volunteer program too.
Chris: Why not? It’s a good experience, I think. I’m thinking of going again next year. Perhaps you can join me.
Amy: That would be great.

G. Amy wants to try volunteering. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Эми говорит: «Well, maybe I should apply for some volunteer program too» («Пожалуй, мне тоже стоит подать заявку на волонтёрскую программу»), а позже соглашается поехать с Крисом: «That would be great» («Это было бы здорово»).

C. Max loves watching TV.
D. Good Guys, Bad Guys features a group of teenagers.
E. The teacher on the show used to be a musician.
F. Sarah loves reading Shakespearean sonnets.
G. Max has not got interested in Good Guys, Bad Guys.

Max: Hi. Sarah, long time no see! How are you?
Sarah: Oh, hi, Max, I am fine, thank you! And you?
Max: I am fine too, thanks. Our summer holidays have just begun, isn’t it great?
Sarah: It’s cool! What have you been doing these days?
Max: Oh, I’ve just been catching up on some sleep. I didn’t sleep enough during the academic year. Now I enjoy being able to sleep late. What about you?
Sarah: I’ve been watching TV. You know how much I love to watch documentaries and reality shows, but I never have enough time to do it during the academic year.
Max: I am not keen on watching TV. I can never find anything interesting on. What have you been watching recently?
Sarah: There is a new reality show called «Good Guys Bad Guys». It’s set on a farm which has been converted into a school for one class of difficult students. It is the job of one man to try and teach these students something in the two weeks they are there.
Max: That sounds exciting! How many students are there on the show?
Sarah: There is a group of sixteen boys and girls, aged thirteen and fourteen. They have all been expelled from schools at least once. Their previous teachers said it was not possible to teach them anything.
Max: Oh really? How could their teachers possibly say a thing like that?
Sarah: Well Max, judging by their behaviour on the programme, it is not hard to see why.
Max: I see. Who is their poor teacher?
Sarah: He is a forty-year-old man. He used to play in a rock band, but he gave up music eight years ago to become a teacher.
Max: That is amazing! So, has he started to teach these difficulties yet?
Sarah: He has. Last night I saw the students have their first lesson with him. It didn’t seem very educational to me, but at least he got the attention of all the students.
Max: Who knows, they may accept him in the end.
Sarah: I think they have already started to accept him. Most of them say he is all right.
Max: I think I need to watch this reality show too. When is the new episode?
Sarah: Actually, it’s tonight. Expect something interesting to happen. Last night he promised to take his students to a field to have a reading lesson. They are going to read Shakespearian sonnets there.
Max: It seems to me you are fascinated by this experiment in education.
Sarah: I am! Would you like to watch the show together? It is on channel four at seven thirty p.m.
Max: Thank you Sarah, it’s a great idea.
Sarah: See you tonight then!

A. It was Linda’s first visit to London.
B. Big Ben is Linda’s favourite place in London.
C. Linda found the jogging tour exhausting.
D. Linda thinks there were enough people on the jogging tour.
E. Linda liked the guides on the London movie tour.
F. Kevin has watched The Dark Knight many times.
G. The London tours Linda took are very expensive.

Kevin: Hi, Linda. Long time no see. How are you getting on?
Linda: Oh, hi, Kevin. I’m fine, thank you. How about you?
Kevin: The same. So, how was your trip to London? Did you enjoy it?
Linda: How do you know that I was in London? I don’t remember telling you that. In fact, I didn’t tell anyone except my parents. It was an absolutely spontaneous decision for me to go there.
Kevin: I dropped in at your place some days ago, as I wanted to invite you to go to the cinema with me. Your mother told me you were in London.
Linda: I see. Well, what can I say? London is fantastic. Every time I go there, I find something new to see, some more new places to explore, and some more new food to try.
Kevin: So what did you do in London?
Linda: The most exciting thing I did in London this time was to go on a city jogging tour.
Kevin: I’ve never heard of such tours. What are they like?
Linda: Basically, this is a six-kilometer running tour that stops off at many of London’s famous sites such as Trafalgar Square, the London Eye, Big Ben, and the Houses of Parliament.
Kevin: It seems to me this is a very memorable and healthy way to experience London.
Linda: I totally agree with you about that. Was it hard for you to go jogging for such a long distance?
Kevin: Come on, Kevin. Six kilometers is a piece of cake for me. You know, I go jogging practically every morning in the local park, in any kind of weather. My normal distance is 10 kilometers, so the jogging tour was pretty easy for me.
Linda: I see.
Kevin: Were there many people on that tour? I doubt it as this sort of tour doesn’t suit everybody.
Linda: There were about 30 of us. If there had been more people, it would have made the tour more difficult for the guide to lead, in my opinion.
Kevin: True. So what else did you do while in London? Did you take any other exciting tours?
Linda: One more tour I took was a movie tour around London. We visited different film locations in and around London. Our guides were all local actors and actresses. They were great storytellers.
Kevin: Did you see the locations for The Dark Knight?
Linda: Yes, I did. I also saw the locations for The Bourne Ultimatum, Pirates of the Caribbean, Part 4, and many others. I love those films, Linda.
Kevin: You’re so lucky. Well, Kevin, you can take both of these tours next time you are in London.
Linda: They are quite affordable, so please don’t think that they cost a fortune.
Kevin: That’s a good idea.

A. It was Linda’s first visit to London. → 2 (False).
Обоснование: Линда говорит: «Every time I go there, I find something new…» («Каждый раз, когда я туда приезжаю, я нахожу что‑то новое…»), что явно указывает на неоднократные поездки в Лондон.

B. Big Ben is Linda’s favourite place in London. → 3 (Not stated).
Обоснование: Биг‑Бен упомянут как одна из остановок бегового тура, но в диалоге нет информации о том, что это её любимое место.

C. Linda found the jogging tour exhausting. → 2 (False).
Обоснование: Линда отмечает, что для неё (как для опытной бегуньи) 6 км — лёгкая дистанция: «Six kilometers is a piece of cake for me…». Она не называет тур утомительным.

D. Linda thinks there were enough people on the jogging tour. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Линда говорит, что в туре было около 30 человек, и добавляет: «If there had been more people, it would have made the tour more difficult for the guide to lead» («Если бы было больше людей, гиду было бы сложнее вести тур»). Это подразумевает, что текущее количество она считает оптимальным.

E. Linda liked the guides on the London movie tour. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Линда хвалит гидов: «Our guides were all local actors and actresses. They were great storytellers».

F. Kevin has watched The Dark Knight many times. → 3 (Not stated).
Обоснование: Кевин спрашивает, видела ли Линда локации из «Тёмного рыцаря», но ничего не говорит о том, сколько раз он сам смотрел фильм.

G. The London tours Linda took are very expensive. → 2 (False).
Обоснование: Линда прямо говорит, что туры «довольно доступные» («They are quite affordable») и не стоят «целого состояния» («don’t cost a fortune»).

A. Jack has a task on Social Studies.
B.Jack is bad at Social Studies.
C. Jack’s Social Studies teacher isn’t strict.
D. Jack has heard about Fairtrade before.
E. The UK is a part of the Fairtrade movement.
F. Jack isn’t interested in buying Fairtrade products.
G. Jack and Mia are going to the cinema on Sunday.

Mia: Hi, Jack, you look so deep in your thoughts. What is the matter?
Jack: Oh, hi, Mia. I’m thinking about my social studies project. The teacher has asked us to do a project on any international movement which helps farmers and workers in developing countries.
Mia: That’s a challenging task indeed. Do you have any ideas?
Jack: I am at a loss, I don’t know what I can do.
Mia: Well, if you need a helping hand, I am here for you.
Jack: Really? You are a star, Mia! I know you watch documentaries quite often. Maybe you can give me just a small hint as to what can be interesting to write about. Do you know our social studies teacher? She is very demanding. She’ll never ever give me a good mark if my project is trivial.
Mia: Why not do a project about Fair Trade?
Jack: Fair trade? What is it? That word does not even ring a bell to me.
Mia: Basically, that is an international movement which aims at making sure that companies pay a fair price for the goods farmers in developing countries produce.
Jack: That sounds interesting. Could you please tell me a bit more about this movement?
Mia: You see, farmers in developing countries are often not able to send their children to school, because they don’t earn enough money. The movement wants these kids to go to school. If farmers join the movement, they get fair prices and can buy school books for their kids.
Jack: How does it work? Does Fair Trade have inspectors who check the businesses?
Mia: Yes, it does. They follow the food route from the farm to the customer to make sure fair prices are paid at each stage.
Jack: Is the movement only about food?
Mia: As far as I know, the movement is constantly growing. It may include clothes made from cotton and things like that.
Jack: Is there such a movement here in the UK?
Mia: In fact, the supermarket on Green Street has Fair Trade products. You can go there and interview the managers to get more information. You may also take some pictures there.
Jack: It is great that I can buy Fair Trade products in my city and become a part of this movement.
Mia: I hope you’ll get an excellent mark for your project.
Jack: Thanks, Mia. I think I should go home now and get started with it. I am so grateful to you. Can I invite you to the cinema at the weekend? It is my way of saying thank you.
Mia: Oh, Jack, I’d love to go to the cinema. There is a new comedy on. Shall we see it?
Jake: It’s a date then.

A. Jack has a task on Social Studies. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Джек говорит, что ему нужно сделать проект по обществознанию: «The teacher has asked us to do a project on any international movement…» («Учитель попросил нас сделать проект о каком‑либо международном движении…»).

B. Jack is bad at Social Studies. → 3 (Not stated).
Обоснование: В диалоге нет оценки успеваемости Джека по предмету. Он лишь признаётся, что не знает, с чего начать проект («I am at a loss»), но это не означает, что он плохо учится.

C. Jack’s Social Studies teacher isn’t strict. → 2 (False).
Обоснование: Джек характеризует учительницу как требовательную: «She is very demanding. She’ll never ever give me a good mark if my project is trivial» («Она никогда не поставит хорошую оценку, если проект будет банальным»).

D. Jack has heard about Fairtrade before. → 2 (False).
Обоснование: Джек прямо говорит, что никогда не слышал о Fair Trade: «That word does not even ring a bell to me»(«Это слово мне ни о чём не говорит»).

E. The UK is a part of the Fairtrade movement. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Миа упоминает, что в Великобритании есть магазины с товарами Fair Trade: «the supermarket on Green Street has Fair Trade products». Это подтверждает участие страны в движении.

F. Jack isn’t interested in buying Fairtrade products. → 2 (False).
Обоснование: Напротив, Джек рад, что может поддержать движение: «It is great that I can buy Fair Trade products in my city and become a part of this movement».

G. Jack and Mia are going to the cinema on Sunday. → 3 (Not stated).
Обоснование: Они договариваются пойти в кино на выходных («at the weekend»), но конкретный день (воскресенье) в диалоге не упоминается.

A. The park is full of children playing.
B. Lily often reads books on psychology.
C. The book contains some facts from the past.
D. Miles finds the book useless.
E. Miles rarely trusts strangers.
F. Lily is going to finish reading the book soon.
G. Miles has invited Lily to the cinema at the weekend.

Lily: Hi, Miles. I’m fine, thank you. How about you?
Miles: The same. I see you are reading a book. It’s nice to read in the park, isn’t it?
Lily: Yes, it is. I like it here very much. There are not so many families with small kids here, as there is nothing interesting for them here, I guess. That’s why I can have some peace and quiet and enjoy my book.
Miles: Is the book interesting? What is it about?
Lily: It’s very interesting. It’s about our first impressions.
Miles: Is it about psychology then?
Lily: Kind of. I can’t say this book is the result of thorough scientific research. It’s pop psychology, in my opinion. I can’t say I trust every word in this book, but it’s definitely fun to read.
Miles: So, what does the book say about first impressions?
Lily: Well, the starting point is that it takes a very short time for the human brain to process a first impression. It says in the past it was necessary for people to make their first impressions very quickly in order to escape from any dangerous situations.
Miles: I didn’t know that. It gives me food for thought indeed.
Lily: Then, the book passes over to explaining the importance of nonverbal communication to the reader. I have found out that our facial expressions and gestures actually say much more about us than we probably want them to.
Miles: I think our body language says more than words. Sometimes I see a person who is saying kind words, but their eyes are cold or indifferent, so I can’t trust such a person.
Lily: That’s exactly the example which is given in the book. Anyway, the author teaches you how to correctly interpret body language. The third chapter has some practical tips on how to produce a good impression on somebody when you meet them for the first time, but I haven’t started it yet.
Miles: I say, Lily, can you lend me the book as soon as you’ve finished it? I’d love to learn more about making a good first impression too. It will come in handy when I leave school and go to college. No one will know me there. I’ll have to make new friends.
Lily: Sure, Miles. I think I should finish the book by the end of the week. Does Saturday sound fine to you?
Miles: Perfect. Thank you very much. Why don’t we go to the cinema on Saturday evening? They’re showing a new film with Al Pacino. You can bring the book and we’ll watch the film.
Lily: That’s a good idea. See you on Saturday then.

A. The park is full of children playing. → 2 (False).
Обоснование: Лили говорит, что в парке не так много семей с маленькими детьми, потому что им там нечего делать: «There are not so many families with small kids here, as there is nothing interesting for them here».

B. Lily often reads books on psychology. → 3 (Not stated).
Обоснование: В диалоге упоминается только одна книга по поп‑психологии, но нет информации о том, что Лили часто читает книги на эту тему.

C. The book contains some facts from the past. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Лили объясняет, что книга говорит о том, как в прошлом людям нужно было быстро формировать первое впечатление, чтобы избежать опасных ситуаций: «It says in the past it was necessary for people to make their first impressions very quickly in order to escape from any dangerous situations».

D. Miles finds the book useless. → 2 (False).
Обоснование: Майлз заинтересован в книге и просит её после прочтения: «I’d love to learn more about making a good first impression too» («Я бы тоже хотел узнать больше о том, как произвести хорошее первое впечатление»). Он видит в ней практическую пользу.

E. Miles rarely trusts strangers. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Майлз делится наблюдением: он не доверяет людям, чьи слова не соответствуют невербальным сигналам («Sometimes I see a person who is saying kind words, but their eyes are cold or indifferent, so I can’t trust such a person»). Это указывает на его настороженность к незнакомцам.

F. Lily is going to finish reading the book soon. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Лили говорит: «I think I should finish the book by the end of the week» («Думаю, я закончу книгу к концу недели»), что подтверждает её намерение скоро завершить чтение.

G. Miles has invited Lily to the cinema at the weekend. → 1 (True).
Обоснование: Майлз предлагает: «Why don’t we go to the cinema on Saturday evening? They’re showing a new film with Al Pacino» («Почему бы нам не сходить в кино в субботу вечером? Там показывают новый фильм с Аль Пачино»). Лили соглашается.

A. Bob is older than his brother Jake.
B. Jake often gets bad marks at school.
C. Jake loves playing online games.
D. Jake used to spend very little time online.
E. Jake can do only one thing at a time.
F. Bob’s parents have lost any hope about Jake.
G. Bob and Ella are going to the cinema on Saturday.

Bob: Hi, Ella! Long time to see. How are you?
Ella: Oh, hi, Bob! I am fine, thanks. How about you?
Bob: I am fine too, thank you.
Look, Bob, I saw your younger brother Jake the other day, and he looked down in the dumps. What’s up? Did he get a bad mark at school?
Bob: He is grounded because he spent too much time online. Now mom and dad have decided he can spend no more than two hours a day online, though he is not happy about it. He is constantly moaning and groaning about not being able to play his favorite online games anymore.
Ella: Oh, I understand. Two hours online a day sounds reasonable to me. How much time did Jake used to spend online?
Bob: Sometimes he spent up to eleven hours online.
Ella: That is incredible! I can’t believe it.
Bob: When mom and dad put together all the time he spends on his mobile phone, computer, games console, or watching TV, they could not believe their eyes either. It’s more hours than they are awake outside school time, after all.
Ella: I don’t think Jake is the only teenager who spends so much time online.I wonder how they are able to do this. I mean, there are only twenty-four hours in a day, you know.
Bob: I think the answer is multi-tasking. Jake seems to have been multitasking every second that he was online. He was doing his homework at the same time as watching a TV show or chatting to friends online and reading reviews of the latest film releases.
Ella: I think it is not easy to do that. It must be causing a lot of stress.
Bob: Well, he has been complaining about headaches for a long time.
Ella: I also think it should cause some problems with concentration. When you are watching a film and texting a friend at the same time, you are not doing any of these properly.
Bob: Jake’s teachers say he sometimes struggles to focus his attention.
Ella: Still, such high levels of media use are now part of young people’s environment. I don’t think anyone can talk them out of doing so.
Bob: Well, mum and dad are optimistic about the whole thing. They understand we are all going to have a hard time with Jake at first, but they do hope things will change for the better pretty soon.
Ella: Well, Bob, I hope they are right. Look, are you doing anything at the weekend? There is a new comedy on. Do you feel like watching it at the cinema together?
Bob: That’s a good idea. I’ll give you a ring on Friday, and we’ll discuss the day and time.
Ella: It’s a date then!

A. Bob is older than his brother Jake. → 1 (True)
Обоснование: Элла прямо называет Джейка младшим братом Боба («your younger brother Jake»), значит, Боб старше.

B. Jake often gets bad marks at school. → 3 (Not stated)
Обоснование: В диалоге упоминается, что у Джейка бывают проблемы с концентрацией внимания на уроках («Jake’s teachers say he sometimes struggles to focus his attention»), но нет информации о его оценках.

C. Jake loves playing online games. → 1 (True)
Обоснование: Боб говорит, что Джейк «постоянно жалуется, что не может играть в свои любимые онлайн‑игры» («he is constantly moaning and groaning about not being able to play his favorite online games anymore»), что подтверждает его увлечение.

D. Jake used to spend very little time online. → 2 (False)
Обоснование: Напротив, Боб сообщает, что Джейк иногда проводил в сети до 11 часов в день («Sometimes he spent up to eleven hours online»).

E. Jake can do only one thing at a time. → 2 (False)
Обоснование: Боб объясняет, что Джейк постоянно занимался многозадачностью («Jake seems to have been multitasking every second that he was online»): делал домашнее задание, смотрел ТВ, общался в сети и читал рецензии одновременно.

F. Bob’s parents have lost any hope about Jake. → 2 (False)

A. Jacob is very busy this summer.
B. Jacob has had a summer job before.
C. Rosie loves drawing.
D. Jacob is a student of an art school.
E. Rosie thinks doodling is quite easy.
F. Rosie has never done doodling.
G. Jacob lives next door to Rosie.

Jacob: Hello, Rosie. It’s nice to see you. How are you? Are you enjoying your summer holidays?
Rosie: Oh, hi, Jacob. Nice to see you, too. I’m fine, thank you. It’s great not to have to do homework. I have so much free time to indulge in my hobbies.
Jacob: I’m so happy for you. If you ask me, well, I’m not doing anything at all. I’m so bored.
Rosie: Don’t you have a hobby? You must be interested in something.
Jacob: Well, I like reading books and watching films, but I can do that all the year round. You know me, I’m not as hard working as you are, and I wasn’t very busy during the academic year.
Rosie: Well, why don’t you get a summer job then? That will keep you busy at least for some hours, and you can earn some money for your gap year next summer.
Jacob: My parents have already given me the same piece of advice, but I don’t want to work this summer. I’d rather take up some hobby instead. Rosie, can you recommend some hobby for me? What’s your hobby?
Rosie: Well, Jacob, my hobby is drawing. I never have time to draw during the academic year, so now I spend a lot of time with my sketchbook. Why don’t you try doodling? It’s easy and fun.
Jacob: Drawing requires some special training, I guess. I have never attended any art classes. What shall I do?
Rosie: It doesn’t require having any special skills. Anybody can do it. And that is why doodling is so good for beginners.
Jacob: I have never heard about doodling before. Could you please tell me more about it?
Rosie: Sure. Actually, there are different kinds of doodles and some illustrators use it to draw pictures for books. However, there are simple abstract doodles when you just take a pen or pencil and draw anything that comes to your mind. Flowers, animals, ocean waves, and so on. You can then color the drawing. It will look fantastic.
Jacob: Have you tried it yourself?
Rosie: I sometimes do it when I feel tired. It really helps me to get rid of stress. I even have a book where some psychologists explain various connections between your doodles and some feelings or problems you might have.
Jacob: I say, Rosie, that sounds really interesting to me. Can you lend me the book? I’d love to read it.
Rosie: You can pop in at my place in the evening and borrow it. No problem.
Jacob: You are a star, Rosie. Thank you very much. Look, I’ve got to go now. My mum is waiting for me. I’ll take the book this evening. Bye, Rosie.
Rosie: See you tonight. Bye, Jacob.

A. Mike is happy with the weather.
B. Mike can play football very well.
C. Mike is fond of computer games.
D. Ann recommends the book shop on High Street.
E. Ann has watched Friends several times.
F. Ann likes the choice of actors in Friends.
G. Ann is pessimistic about future weather.

Mike: Hi, Anne. Long time no see. How are the things?
Anne: Oh, hi, Mike. I’m fine, thanks. How about you?
Mike: To tell the truth, Anne, I’m so bored. This weather is killing me. It has been raining for ages. I was looking forward to the summer holidays so much. I hoped to spend much time outdoors playing football and things like that. But no such luck.
Anne: Oh, Mike, I do understand you. It seems that the rain will never stop. Still, I don’t think we should be down in the dumps. It’s our summer holidays, after all. We have a lot of free time, so we should make use of it.
Mike: But how? I really don’t know what to do. My brother plays computer games all day long, and he appears to be quite happy. But computer games are not my cup of tea.
Anne: Why don’t you take up some hobby? You can start drawing, or make wooden models of ships or cars. This will take a lot of time, and it’s interesting to do such things.
Mike: I don’t know. I don’t think I’ll manage that.
Anne: Why don’t you read a book then? There’s a new bookstore on High Street. It has an amazing selection of books. You can find all the latest bestsellers there, as well as absolute classics like Jane Austen or Charles Dickens.
Mike: Come on, Anne. Who wants to read a book on holidays? The academic year was so difficult. We had so much homework and books to read. Don’t you think we had enough on our plate? I just want to relax and have some fun.
Anne: You can watch a sitcom, then. It will keep you busy for a while. And sitcoms are usually very funny.
Mike: That’s not half a bad idea. Can you recommend a sitcom to me?
Anne: Well, I think you’d better start with Friends. It’s a hilarious series, about six friends living in New York. There’s not much action there, but the dialogues are superb, and the cast is just perfect.
Mike: I have never heard about this sitcom before, but what you are saying sounds interesting. Does it have many seasons?
Anne: There are ten seasons, about twenty-five episodes each. The episodes are relatively short, though. They are only about thirty minutes long, as far as I remember, so watching a season may take just a day or two.
Mike: OK, I think I will watch it. If it’s really interesting, the following week won’t be boring to me.
Anne: You’ll like it, I’m sure. And I hope in a week the weather will finally get better and we’ll be able to spend some time outdoors.
Mike: Let’s hope for the best, Anne. Look, I’ve got to go now. Sorry. Take care. Bye, Anne.
Anne: Bye, Mike.

A. Greg studied in Russia for a year.
B. Mary wants Greg to give her some advice.
C. Mary still needs to get a visa to Russia.
D. Greg thinks Mary shouldn’t take cash.
E. Greg and Mary live in London.
F. Mary always tips waiters in restaurants.
G. Greg disliked Russian soups.

Greg: Hello, Mary! It’s so good to see you. How are things?
Mary: Oh, hi, Greg. I’m fine, thank you. What about you?
Greg: I’m okay, thanks. Congratulations on your summer holidays! I hope you are going to do something really exciting during them.
Mary: Actually, I’m going to travel to Russia.
Greg: Russia? Such a great choice! I spent a year in Russia as an exchange student and I absolutely loved the country.
Mary: Oh, I’ve clean forgotten you’ve been to Russia. It’s so good we’ve met today then. I hope you can give me some useful tips on my future trip.
Greg: I’ll be glad to be of some help. What would you like to know?
Mary: Well, let me think … I have got my visa already and I’ve booked my trip with the travel agency, so I guess I have just a few practical questions.
Greg: So, go ahead.
Mary: Okay. The first issue is the money. Should I take cash or can I pay by my credit card?
Greg: If you stick to bigger cities, your credit card should be fine. In very small towns paying by credit card or withdrawing cash could be a problem, though.
Mary: Oh, I won’t go to any small towns. The tour includes just big cities, like Moscow or Saint Petersburg.
Greg: Then you don’t need to worry. You’ll find exchange offices and ATMs at banks without any problems. If I were you, I’d take some cash just to be on the safe side plus the credit card.
Mary: Did you have an impression that it’s safe in Russia?
Greg: You can visit any place and peacefully walk on the streets. However, you can easily become a victim of pickpockets in the underground, so take care of your wallet and don’t keep a lot of cash on you.
Mary: Well, no surprise here. London is just the same. What would you say about the food? Is it much different from what we have here in the UK?
Greg: I’m sure you’ll find something to your liking. The only problem you can face is that they seldom have a menu in English.
Mary: Should I tip?
Greg: If you wish. Tipping is expected but not mandatory. In any case, check your bill before paying.
Mary: Which dishes did you like most of all?
Greg: Well, I thought soups were quite nice. Generally speaking, Russian cuisine is not spicy. I think you’ll like it.
Mary: Thank you, Greg. I’ll let you know about my impressions when I get back.
Greg: Okay. Have fun!
Mary: I will.

A. The client has followed his friend’s recommendation.
B. The client has never been to London before.
C. The client is single.
D. The client is surprised at the high price of the room.
E. One cannot try British food at the hotel’s restaurant.
F. The 5 o’clock tea weekend service is very expensive.
G. The client doesn’t like spas very much.

Receptionist: Hello, The Grand Hotel. How can I help you?
Robert: Hello. I’ll be visiting London next week and I’d like to make a reservation in your hotel. My friend has recently stayed at it and said it was perfect.
Receptionist: We are very happy to hear that. You have made an excellent choice, sir. We are located in the historical part of the city, so if it’s your first visit to London, it won’t take you long to get to the major attractions. Let’s see if we have some rooms for the dates you need. When is your reservation for?
Robert: It’s for three nights, starting with the 13th of this month.
Receptionist: I see. Would you like a single or a double room?
Robert: A single, please. I’m travelling alone.
Receptionist: Let me check. OK? Yes, that’s fine. I have a nice room for you. And your name is?
Robert: My name is Robert Brown. Could you please tell me how much it will be?
Receptionist: Yes, sure. It is £95 a night. Is that OK? I believe it’s not that expensive, considering our prime location.
Robert: Yes, that’s fine. The price sounds quite reasonable to me. Is breakfast included?
Receptionist: Sure. We serve both traditional British and continental breakfast. It’s very tasty. Can I get your credit card number, please?
Robert: Yes, it’s a visa. 4978 6789 4567 1256. And what facilities do you have?
Receptionist: Well, we’ve got room service, of course. There is a nice restaurant on the top floor that serves traditional British cuisine, so you can try roast beef with Yorkshire pudding and cakes and anything else you would like. At the weekend, we also serve 5 o’clock tea with delicious sandwiches as a compliment for our guests, so it’s free.
Robert: Oh, what a pity. I’m leaving on Friday night.
Receptionist: Oh, maybe next time then, right? OK, back to our facilities. We’ve also got a spa in our hotel. I’m afraid the choice of spa rituals is rather limited, but if you need to relax after a hard-working day or a long-walking tour around London, I’m sure you’ll be able to find something to your liking.
Robert: All right, I’m not a fan of spas, but I’ll take it into consideration. Would you like to find anything else out, sir?
Receptionist: No, thank you. We are looking forward to seeing you on the 13th, sir.
Robert: Thanks a lot. Goodbye.

Обоснование: Роберт находит цену разумной: «The price sounds quite reasonable to me».

G. Julie did her project about Harry Potter a year ago.

Steve: Hello Julie, it’s so nice to see you. I’m okay. It’s good not to have to go to school every day. No homework. Life is great.
Julie: I can understand you. I also enjoy doing nothing. Hey, you are reading something. I hope it’s not a school textbook.
Steve: No, it isn’t. It is a Harry Potter book, actually.
Julie: Don’t you think that this series of books is for kids? Not a person who is to leave school in a year?
Steve: Well, my brother Joss has just started watching Harry Potter movies. You know, he’s only seven. And I have to look after him anyway, so I watched a couple of films with him and I got interested. Didn’t you read about Harry Potter when you were younger?
Julie: No, I didn’t. I’m probably the only person in the UK who hasn’t read all the Harry Potter books.
Steve: That’s probably true. Well, have you spotted many differences between the books and the films?
Julie: Not really. At the same time, this is not my purpose. I just enjoy the story itself.
Steve: Yes, the story is very positive.
Julie: That’s surprising indeed, considering that Joanne Rowling, you know, the lady who is the author of the Harry Potter series, well, while she was writing her first book, she was out of work, divorced and depressed. She completed her first book, but nobody wanted to publish it at first. Then she found a publishing house which agreed to publish her story.
Steve: Yes, I’ve heard about that. Well, if you don’t succeed at first, try and try again, right? Today she is the highest earning woman in Britain. She’s also the first person ever to become a billionaire from writing books.
Julie: That’s true. The books have been translated into more than 60 languages as far as I know. You seem to know a lot about Joanna Rowling, don’t you?
Steve: I actually did a school project about her.
Julie: Oh Julie, can I please see it? I’m so interested in everything which is connected with Harry Potter now. Perhaps I’ll be able to tell my brother some interesting facts about Harry Potter after reading your project paper.
Steve: Okay. Drop by in the evening and I’ll give you a copy.
Julie: Thanks Julie, you’re a star.
Steve: You’re welcome Steve.

A. John and Amanda are going back to school soon.
B. Amanda has an elder sister.
C. Amanda often works as a volunteer in summer.
D. John has traveled to a lot of places.
E. Amanda greatly enjoyed her tour around Scotland.
F. Amanda has taken many pictures in Scotland.
G. Amanda’s tour around Scotland was expensive.

John: Hi, Amanda, it’s great seeing you. Our summer holidays are coming to an end. Are you looking forward to return into school?
Amanda: Oh, hi, John. Well, I’m a bit sad that the summer is almost over. I wish I could have some more time to travel and get some new impressions.
John: Well, summers can’t last forever, can they? So, have you been travelling much?
Amanda: Well, my sister and I decided not to go abroad this year. Last summer we took part in a great project in China. Volunteering was great, but this time we decided we just needed some rest, so we booked a tour around Scotland.
John: Scotland? I’ve never been there. In fact, when I leave Birmingham, it’s just to go on a school trip to some London museum or to Spain with my parents. They are so conservative. They love going to Spain, and I can’t talk them into choosing another country for their vacation.
Amanda: Scotland is amazing. It’s breathtaking. I don’t have the words to explain to you how much I loved it.
John: Oh, what did the tour include?
Amanda: To begin with, we stayed in Edinburgh for a week. We explored the city. You know, the castle, the Royal Mile, and the museums. It was amazing. We took it real slowly. We didn’t want to hurry. Then we had a three-day tour of some Scottish lakes and castles. It turns out that there are lots of ruins of beautiful Scottish castles there.
John: I bet you took a lot of pictures.
Amanda: My sister did. You know, I rarely take pictures. I prefer to draw the places I like. I have several sketchbooks full of black and white drawings of Scotland. You should come and see them.
John: I’d love to see Loch Ness and Loch Lomond. Did you see the famous Loch Ness Monster?
Amanda: Do you believe that legend, John?
John: Oh no, Amanda, I’m only joking. What else did your tour include?
Amanda: One of the highlights of our tour was a visit to some Scottish islands. We visited the isles of Giga, Iona and Mull. They impressed us greatly with their wild beauty and picturesque landscapes.
John: It looks as if you had a wonderful trip. I wish I had been there with you
Amanda: You still have enough time to take the tour. I can give you the phone number of the travel agency. The tour is definitely not cheap, but it’s certainly worth the money.
John: Thank you, Amanda.

Обоснование: Джон предполагает «I bet you took a lot of pictures» («Наверняка ты сделала много фото»). Но Аманда отвечает: «My sister did. You know, I rarely take pictures. I prefer to draw…» («Это моя сестра. Я редко фотографирую. Я предпочитаю рисовать…»). Сама Аманда фотографий не делала.

G. Amanda’s tour around Scotland was expensive. → 1 (True)
Обоснование: Аманда прямо говорит: «The tour is definitely not cheap, but it’s certainly worth the money» («Тур определённо недешёвый, но он точно стоит этих денег»).

B. Most people in Iona are into tourism.
C. Iona has an important religious building.
D. Steve is very good at painting.
E. Lora has taken many pictures of Iona.
F. Lora did a lot of reading while in Iona.
G. There is no accommodation for tourists in Iona.

Laura: Oh, hi, Steve. I’m good, thank you. I’ve just returned from my trip to Iona.
Steve: Iona? I have never heard about that place. Where is it?
Laura: Well, Iona is a small island off the western coast of Scotland. My aunt lives there, and she invited me to spend several weeks with her during my summer holidays.
Steve: Is it a popular tourist destination?
Laura: Not really. In fact, I’m not at all surprised you’ve never heard about it. The local population of Iona is only about 120 people. Most of them are involved in traditional farming and crafts like pottery. Summers are a bit livelier, though. So, tourists do go there sometimes. You know, ecotourism is now very popular, and Ione is a perfect place for that. With no public transport and exhaust fumes, good food and nice landscapes, it’s a nice place to have some rest from the hustle and bustle of a big city.
Steve: Does the island have any points of interest?
Laura: It does. The most famous of them is the Iona Abbey. It is one of the oldest Christian religious centres in Western Europe. It was the main point for spreading Christianity all over Scotland, and that’s why many pilgrims still come to see it.
Steve: So it was established in the 6th century then?
Laura: Exactly. And in the 8th century, it was first attacked by the Vikings, since it was also the centre for copying books.
Steve: Does the island have beautiful landscapes?
Laura: Iona is so beautiful that there are over 170 artists who have portrayed it. There is even an art book called Iona Portrayed, The Island Through Artists’ Eyes. I bought a copy for myself so you can see it. I know you are interested in painting. It’s also a popular location in terms of books. My aunt told me that a lot of books are set in Iona. Have you read any of them? Your aunt must have at least some of them in her book collection.
Steve: I didn’t have time to. I spent all my days walking. The atmosphere there is so peaceful and spiritual. It was a real retreat.
Laura: Well, I’m so happy for you, Laura. Maybe one day I’ll visit the island myself.
Steve: Why not? There are two small guest houses and a hostel there.
Laura: I see. Look, Laura, I’ve got to go now. I’ll drop in at your place to pick up the book, OK?
Steve: Yes, OK.

A. Lora’s relative lives in Iona. → 1 (True)
Обоснование: Лора прямо говорит, что на острове Иона живёт её тётя: «My aunt lives there, and she invited me to spend several weeks with her during my summer holidays».

B. Most people in Iona are into tourism. → 2 (False)
Обоснование: Лора поясняет, что большинство местных жителей заняты традиционным земледелием и ремёслами вроде гончарного дела: «Most of them are involved in traditional farming and crafts like pottery». Туризм упомянут лишь как сезонное явление летом, но не как основное занятие населения.

C. Iona has an important religious building. → 1 (True)
Обоснование: Лора рассказывает об аббатстве Иона — одном из древнейших христианских центров Западной Европы: «The most famous of them is the Iona Abbey. It is one of the oldest Christian religious centres in Western Europe». Это явно значимое религиозное сооружение.

D. Steve is very good at painting. → 3 (Not stated)
Обоснование: В диалоге нет информации о художественных навыках Стива. Лора лишь упоминает его интерес к живописи: «I know you are interested in painting», но это не свидетельствует о его мастерстве.

E. Lora has taken many pictures of Iona. → 3 (Not stated)
Обоснование: Лора не говорит, что фотографировала остров. Она упоминает художественную книгу «Iona Portrayed, The Island Through Artists’ Eyes» и покупку её копии, но о собственных фотографиях речи не идёт.

F. Lora did a lot of reading while in Iona. → 2 (False)
Обоснование: Напротив, Лора подчёркивает, что проводила время в прогулках и наслаждалась атмосферой: «I spent all my days walking. The atmosphere there is so peaceful and spiritual. It was a real retreat». О чтении книг во время поездки она не сообщает.

G. There is no accommodation for tourists in Iona. → 2 (False)
Обоснование: Стив уточняет, что на острове есть места для размещения туристов: «There are two small guest houses and a hostel there». Это прямо опровергает утверждение об отсутствии жилья для гостей.

A. Tom is going to see a film with some friends.
B. Abbie accepts Tom’s invitation.
C. Abbie often plays her instrument.
D. Abbie’s elderly neighbour lives alone.
E. Tom has never tried playing a musical instrument.
F. Abbie plays on her school volleyball team.
G. Tom says that he hopes Abbie could go to the cinema with him and his friends some day.

Tom: Hello, Abby. How are you?
Abby: Hello, Tom. I am well, thank you. Where are you going?
Tom: A bunch of guys and I are meeting in ten minutes in front of the Starlight Cinema. We’re going to watch the new Star Wars. Do you want to come with us?
Abby: I’d love to, but I can’t. I’m sorry. I’ve got a violin lesson in half an hour. My teacher doesn’t like it when I miss my lessons.
Tom: Wow, Abby, I had no idea you were into music. How long have you been playing the violin?
Abby: It’ll be five years in September. I have private lessons twice a week, and then I play in the orchestra once a week.
Tom: Sounds like a lot of work, Abby. I don’t think I could play a musical instrument. Don’t you also have to practice at home every day, in addition to your lessons?
Abby: Sure, Tom. An hour or so a day, at least. My poor neighbours have to listen to my violin every day. But now I play well, so they don’t mind it so much. The elderly woman next door told me she enjoyed daily live music. It wasn’t the case a couple of years ago when I was just beginning to learn. She would come over and complain to my mum that she didn’t have peace and quiet because of my violin.
Tom: I think my grandmother would invest in earplugs if I played the violin. I’ve got no musical talent whatsoever. I don’t even sing in the shower, you know. Have you had any music lessons?
Abby: Maybe you just haven’t tried it, so you don’t really know what you’re capable of.
Tom: My dad has tried to teach me to play the guitar. He’s been playing it since childhood, so he thought I should learn to play it as well. But he got impatient very quickly, and with football and swimming I don’t really have time for music, you see.
Abby: That’s right. I forgot that you’re on our school teams. Well, sport is something I’m not very good at. I’ve tried to play volleyball, but I miss the ball too often, so the coach sort of told me to try something else instead of the volleyball team. I guess everyone has his or her own talents. Listen, I’ve got to go now, or I’ll be late for my lesson, and my teacher can’t stand my tardiness. So I’ll catch you later, all right?
Tom: Yep, I’ve got to run too, or I’ll miss my movie. Maybe you can come to the cinema with us next time, Abby, when you have a break in your music lessons. It was good seeing you. Take care.
Abby: You too, Tom. See you later.

A. Tom is going to see a film with some friends. → 1 (True)

C. Abbie often plays her instrument. → 1 (True)
Обоснование: Абби сообщает, что занимается скрипкой уже пять лет, берёт частные уроки дважды в неделю и играет в оркестре раз в неделю. Кроме того, она ежедневно практикуется дома по часу: «An hour or so a day, at least» — это подтверждает регулярность занятий.

D. Abbie’s elderly neighbour lives alone. → 3 (Not stated)
Обоснование: В диалоге упоминается пожилая соседка, которая сначала жаловалась на шум, а потом стала наслаждаться музыкой: «The elderly woman next door told me she enjoyed daily live music». Однако нигде не сказано, живёт ли она одна или с кем‑то — информация отсутствует.

E. Tom has never tried playing a musical instrument. → 2 (False)
Обоснование: Том рассказывает, что отец пытался научить его играть на гитаре: «My dad has tried to teach me to play the guitar» — значит, он всё‑таки пробовал.

Обоснование: Абби говорит, что пробовала играть в волейбол, но тренер посоветовал ей выбрать другой вид спорта: «I’ve tried to play volleyball, but I miss the ball too often, so the coach sort of told me to try something else instead of the volleyball team» — она не входит в школьную команду.

G. Tom says that he hopes Abbie could go to the cinema with him and his friends some day. → 1 (True)
