  1. was only a matter of time
  2. stretches all the way back to
  3. is celebrated on the anniversary of
  4. became the subject of many legends
  5. appeared in American popular culture
  6. began dressing up unemployed men in
  7. began to advertise Christmas shopping

A → 2 (stretches all the way back to). Фраза stretches all the way back to the 3rd century («восходит к III веку») подчёркивает древность происхождения образа Санта‑Клауса и связывает его с монахом святым Николаем.

B → 4 (became the subject of many legends).

C → 3 (is celebrated on the anniversary of his death, December 6).

D → 5 (appeared in American popular culture). Фраза appeared in American popular culture at the end of the 18th century («появился в американской массовой культуре в конце XVIII века») обозначает важный этап трансформации образа: от европейского святого к культурному символу Нового Света. Sint Nikolaas.

E → 7 (began to advertise Christmas shopping).

F → 1 (was only a matter of time). Идиома it was only a matter of time before…
