What is the essence of Alice’s punctuation theory of screenwriting?
- You should be careful with punctuation in your text.
- Each part of a script should contain a certain focus.
- There must be more questions than answers in a story.
Presenter: In your recent book on writing you speak about the so-called punctuation theory of screenwriting. Could you please explain to us what that is?
Alice: Sure. You kind of divide the script into parts. The end of part one ends with a question mark, I mean the major dramatic question or what the protagonist wants has been established. The end of part two ends with an exclamation point, some unexpected or surprising piece of new information that launches the story further. Part three ends with a period which is the resolution or how the major dramatic question has been answered.
