Jim: Good morning, madam. My name is Jim Brown, and I was just wondering if you still accept any new members to the clubs at your leisure centre.
Receptionist: Of course we do. The registration is all the year round. What club are you particularly interested in, Jim?
Jim: The thing is, I don’t know. I guess I’m just bad at time management. I’ve got so much time on my hands, and I don’t know how to spend it.
Receptionist: Don’t you think you should probably devote more time to your school?
Jim: Not really. You see, I’m a good student, and I only have excellent marks. It’s just easy for me to study, and my homework doesn’t take me long.
Receptionist: Okay, that was important for me to find out your joining the club will not interfere with your academic results. Then my first question is back. What do you enjoy doing, Jim?
Jim: Well, I used to be interested in sports. I did karate and weightlifting. I still do a couple of sessions per week to keep in shape, but that’s it.
Receptionist: I see. Anything else you like to do?
Jim: Well, I’m quite fond of reading books and watching films, but everybody does that, don’t they?
Receptionist: Yes and no. You may read a book or watch a film and even like it, but forget it in a couple of weeks, as you have missed some really important ideas from it.
Jim: How could I not understand the book I like?
Receptionist: You see, every book or every film is a reflection of some certain time and epoch. It’s necessary to know the historical background of the time when the book was written. Sometimes knowing the writer’s biography is crucial to fully appreciating the story. If it’s a film, the director’s style and symbols used in the film influence its final impression on you.
Jim: It sounds exciting. I’ve never thought of such things.
Receptionist: At our leisure centre, we have a special club. If we are going to read a book or watch a film, we have lectures and seminars on the points I have just mentioned.
Jim: I’d love to become a member of this club. Is it free?
Receptionist: It’s free, but you’ll have to get books. If you can’t find it in your local library, you’ll have to borrow it from somewhere or buy it. As for films, we watch them here.
Jim: That suits me perfectly.
Receptionist: Take the form to fill in. Our classes are Tuesday and Friday, 5 pm.
Jim: Fine. Thank you very much, madam.
A. The registration at the leisure centre has time limits. → 2 (False)
Обоснование: Администратор прямо говорит: «The registration is all the year round» — регистрация открыта круглый год, без временных ограничений.
B. Jim doesn’t know how to organize his free time properly. → 1 (True)
Обоснование: Джим признаётся: «I guess I’m just bad at time management. I’ve got so much time on my hands, and I don’t know how to spend it» — он действительно испытывает трудности с организацией свободного времени.
C. Jim doesn’t have any communication problems at school. → 3 (Not stated)
Обоснование: В диалоге ничего не сказано о коммуникациях Джима в школе. Упоминается лишь его успеваемость («I’m a good student, and I only have excellent marks»), но не социальные взаимодействия.
D. Jim has a background in sports. → 1 (True)
Обоснование: Джим рассказывает: «I used to be interested in sports. I did karate and weightlifting. I still do a couple of sessions per week to keep in shape» — у него есть спортивный опыт и он продолжает тренироваться.
E. Jim thinks most people enjoy books and movies. → 1 (True)
Обоснование: На вопрос администратора о его увлечениях Джим отвечает: «Well, I’m quite fond of reading books and watching films, but everybody does that, don’t they?» — он считает, что чтение и просмотр фильмов распространены среди большинства людей.
F. Jim has no chance to find the necessary books in his library. → 3 (Not stated)
Обоснование: Администратор лишь предупреждает, что если книгу не получится найти в местной библиотеке, придётся взять её где‑то ещё или купить: «If you can’t find it in your local library, you’ll have to borrow it from somewhere or buy it». Наличие нужных книг в местной библиотеке не подтверждается и не опровергается, поэтому верный ответ — 3 (Not stated).
G. The classes Jim is interested in take place three times a week. → 2 (False)
Обоснование: Администратор чётко указывает расписание: «Our classes are Tuesday and Friday, 5 pm» — занятия проходят два раза в неделю (вторник и пятница), а не три.
