Alice: It’s almost lunchtime! Are you hungry, Ron? 

Ron: No, Alice! Not really, but I wouldn’t mind some pancakes with strawberry jam! 

Alice: I wouldn’t mind pancakes either! But sorry, we’ve got neither eggs nor milk to make them! What we can make is either spaghetti or sandwiches with ham and cheese. 

Ron: You know what I’ll choose, don’t you?

Alice: Oh, yeah! I know that you’re happy to eat spaghetti three times a day! Ok. I’ll have it too, so as not to cook anything else. Would you like your spaghetti with some sauce or with salad?

Ron: With tomato sauce, please. 

Alice: It would be nice of you to help me set a table.

Mark: Hi, Jess! Are we late?
Jess: No, Mark, it’s ok but we need to hurry. It’s maths, and Mr Smith hates it when anyone’s late.
Mark: Yeah. I don’t like maths, actually — too monotonous. But after that we’ve got science – it makes things better!
Jess: Yeah, you are good at science. Probably, the best in the class.
Mark: It’s because I enjoy it most of all! Science explains how the world works. It’s fantastic. Like magic!
Jess: Probably. I like neither maths nor science. I don’t mind French, but grammar drills make me feel so bored.
Mark: Me too. By the way, have you finished that project in French?
Jess: Mmm, not yet.

Kate: Oh, sorry, James. What did you say? I didn’t hear you.
James: Of course. Because you were wearing your headphones. What did you listen to?
Kate: My Spanish course.
James: Cool. Your new hobby? It’s a shame I can’t speak any foreign languages. My brother is learning French. He eventries to write poems in French.
Kate: There’s nothing to be ashamed of. Some people enjoy learning languages, others are good at other things. As for you — you’ve got a great talent for roller skating!
James: I won’t argue. I won the first prize in the City Rollers’ competition, by the way.
Kate: Congratulations!

Ben: Any plans for tomorrow, Sue? I’m going to the swimming pool. How about joining me? 
Sue: No, Ben, thank you. I’ve got a cold and the swimming pool is the last place I would like to go to.
Ben: Oh, sorry! I didn’t know. Probably, you should see the doctor tomorrow. 
Sue: No, no need. It’s not that serious. I just feel like staying at home tomorrow, watching a film, having tea with lemon. Just a lazy day.
Ben: Sounds tempting. Especially in weather like this. It’s absolutely freezing outside and will be worse tomorrow. 
Sue: How about joining me?
Ben: Sorry, I can’t miss my training session whatever the weather is like.

Ann: What’s up Nick? Why is your little brother crying? Has he hurt himself? Have you broken his toy again? 
Nick: No, he’s alright as well as his toys. He just wants to play with his cars with me. 
Ann: Why don’t you play with him then?
Nick: Look, Ann, we played with these cars in the morning and yesterday, and the day before yesterday. I’m sick and tired of his toys. He’s got a garage with toy cars and mum keeps buying them again and again. 
Ann: But he’s little and so cute! It’s normal he enjoys playing with his older brother, isn’t it? 
Nick: OK, I’ll let you play with him for a change. You’re his older cousin. Go on, go on! Show me how to do this!

Joanna: Hey, Tim! I’ve been looking for you!
Tim: Oh, Joanna! What happened?
Joanna: Nothing! I’ve been trying to contact you since yesterday, but you never answer. Is your phone switched off or have you blocked me?
Tim: Oh, no, certainly not. I’ve just got a new phone number. Sorry I did not tell you. 
Joanna: Why, what happened? 
Tim: I lost my phone, I must have left it somewhere. So I had to buy a new one together with the sim-card. Just a minute. I’ll call you and you’ll get my number. And why did you call? 
Joanna: Mia and I are going on a picnic this Sunday. Care to join us? 
Tim: Sure. Sounds like fun.

Kate Hi, Ron! I called you on Sunday but you didn’t answer. Were you out of town?  
Ron: Yes, we went to the city for a brief entertaining trip, as mum called it. 
Kate: Wow! Was it fun? 
Ron: Absolutely not. I had plans to see the motoraces, they’ve just built a new mototrack, and you know how much I love motorbike competitions but my sister spoilt a whole day. 
Kate: How could she? She is a sweet little girl. 
Ron: She is, but she wanted to go to the zoo. Mum could not disappoint her. 
Kate: I’m so sorry, but it’s not the worst scenario ever. When we went for a holiday last time, I got a cold and spent six days inside in the hotel room.

Harry: What are you doing this summer, Jess?
Jess: We haven’t got any definite plans yet, Harry. We may go to my aunt’s house. She lives in France. 
Harry:  Sounds great. 
Jess: I love it too. But mum insists I’m going to Berlin. She wants me to practise German. I don’t like the idea and my German is ok anyway. 
Harry: Don’t you like Germany?
Jess: I definitely prefer the French countryside to Germany or Britain and I’ve got cousins there. We usually have so much fun together. 
Harry: And you can practise your French there, can’t you?
Jess: Not really. My cousins are learning English and want me to speak English so that they can practise.

Ken: Hi, Sue! Are you shopping for sportswear?
Sue: Yes. I’ve bought a tracksuit for myself and a couple of tennis shirts for my brother. He’s taking part in a tournament soon but his old shirts are too small already. And what have you bought? Is it a glove for boxing?
Ken: No! I did some boxing years ago but that sport is not for me.
Sue: It looks cruel to me though some people find it exciting.
Ken: Right.
Sue: And what’s the glove for then?
Ken: It’s a baseball glove. I’ve joined our school baseball team.
Sue: Congrats!
Ken: Too early. I’m just a beginner in this game. My first training session is tomorrow and I’m feeling nervous.
