Major Public Holidays (Official Days Off of Russia)

These are the biggest celebrations, often marked by large concerts, fireworks, and family gatherings.

  1. New YearНовый год – January 1st.
    • The most important and beloved holiday in Russia, even more so than Christmas. It has a magical, secular atmosphere. The main figure is Ded Moroz (Grandfather Frost) and his granddaughter Snegurochka (The Snow Maiden). Celebrations include a festive family dinner (with «Olivier» salad), watching the President’s address at 23:55 and fireworks.
  2. Orthodox ChristmasРождество – January 7th.
    • A religious and family holiday. Many attend church services on Christmas Eve (January 6th) for the festive liturgy. It’s a quieter holiday compared to the New Year’s frenzy.
  3. Defender of the Fatherland DayДень защитника Отечества – February 23rd.
    • Originally the Day of the Soviet Army, it is now a day to honor all men—soldiers, veterans, and in a broad sense, just «men» as the protectors. Women often give small gifts to the men in their lives.
  4. International Women’s DayМеждународный женский день – March 8th.
    • A major spring holiday celebrating women. It’s a kind of a mix of Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day. Men give flowers, chocolates, and gifts to all the important women in their lives: mothers, wives, daughters, colleagues.
  5. Spring and Labour DayПраздник Весны и Труда – May 1st.
    • Historically a day for workers’ parades, it’s now mainly a spring holiday marking the start of the gardening season («дачный сезон») and a chance for short vacations.
  6. Victory DayДень Победы – May 9th.
    • One of the most solemn and significant holidays. It commemorates the victory over Nazi Germany in 1945. It’s marked by military parades (most famously on Red Square), the immortal «St. George’s ribbon» campaign, laying flowers at war memorials, and evening fireworks. The phrase «С праздником Великой Победы!» is commonly heard.
  7. Russia DayДень России – June 12th.
    • Marks the adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Russian Federation in 1990. It’s a patriotic holiday with official ceremonies, concerts, and awards. Many simply enjoy a day off in the early summer.
  8. National Unity DayДень народного единства – November 4th.
    • A relatively new holiday (since 2005) that replaced the Soviet-era November 7th holiday. It commemorates the popular uprising that expelled Polish forces from Moscow in 1612, marking the end of the «Time of Troubles.» It is marked by patriotic rallies and concerts.
  9. EasterПасха – Date changes yearly.
    • The most important religious holiday. Celebrated with all-night church services, the greeting «Христос воскрес!» – «Воистину воскрес!» (Christ is risen! – Truly He is risen!), and festive foods like kulich (Easter bread) and paskha (a sweet cheese dessert). The tradition of coloring eggs is universal.
  10. MaslenitsaМасленица – Week before Lent.
    • A folk holiday celebrating the end of winter («проводы зимы»). The main symbol is blini (thin pancakes), representing the sun. The week ends with the burning of a straw effigy and asking for forgiveness on «Forgiveness Sunday

Bank Holidays (Official Public Holidays of the UK)

These are the main days off work, established by law.

  1. New Year’s Day – January 1st.
    • Celebrated with fireworks (most famously in London), parties, and the making of «New Year’s resolutions.» In Scotland, Hogmanay is a much bigger celebration lasting several days.
  2. Good Friday – Friday before Easter Sunday.
    • A solemn Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion. Traditional food includes hot cross buns (sweet buns marked with a cross).
  3. Easter Monday – Monday after Easter Sunday.
    • A day for family activities, egg hunts, and eating chocolate eggs. Easter itself celebrates the resurrection of Jesus.
  4. Early May Bank Holiday – First Monday in May.
    • Welcomes spring. Often marked by local May Day festivities like maypole dancing and crowning a May Queen.
  5. Spring Bank Holiday – Last Monday in May.
    • A long weekend for outdoor trips, gardening, or attending festivals (like the bizarre Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling).
  6. Summer Bank Holiday – Last Monday in August.
    • The traditional end of summer. Many people go to the seaside or attend carnivals and festivals.
  7. Christmas Day – December 25th.
    • The main family holiday. Traditions include: a Christmas dinner (roast turkey, roast potatoes, Brussels sprouts, Christmas pudding), pulling Christmas crackers, listening to the Queen’s/King’s Christmas Broadcast, and decorating a Christmas tree.
  8. Boxing Day – December 26th.
    • A day for relaxing, visiting extended family, eating leftovers, and shopping the sales. Historically, it was the day to give «Christmas boxes» (gifts/money) to servants and tradespeople.

Other British Holidays

Unique National & Historical Holidays

These are not always days off, but are deeply embedded in culture.

  1. Bonfire Night (Guy Fawkes Night) – November 5th.
    • A uniquely British celebration. Commemorates the failure of the Gunpowder Plot to blow up Parliament in 1605. Celebrated with bonfires, fireworks displays, and burning an effigy of Guy Fawkes. The rhyme goes: «Remember, remember, the fifth of November…«
  2. Remembrance Day – November 11th.
    • A solemn day to remember those who died in wars. At 11 AM, a two-minute silence is observed. People wear poppies (red artificial flowers) in the weeks leading up to it. The main ceremony is at the Cenotaph in London on the nearest Sunday (Remembrance Sunday).
  3. Saint George’s Day – April 23rd.
    • England’s national day (St. George is the patron saint). It is marked less intensely than other nations’ days, but you’ll see the flag of St. George (a red cross on a white background) and some pubs and schools may have events.

Traditional Festivals & Events (with specific dates/foods)

  • Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday) – The day before Lent (41 days before Easter). The last chance to use up rich foods like eggs and milk by making… pancakes! Many towns hold pancake races, where people run while flipping pancakes in a pan.
  • Mothering Sunday (Mother’s Day) – Fourth Sunday of Lent. A day to honour mothers, with cards and gifts. Originally, it was a day when domestic servants were allowed to return to their «mother church.»
  • Harvest Festival – Usually late September. A Christian tradition giving thanks for the harvest. Churches and schools are decorated with produce (fruit, vegetables, sheaves of wheat), which is later donated to charity.
  • Halloween – October 31st. Growing in popularity, with children dressing up and «trick-or-treating.» The older, Celtic origin is linked to.
  • All Souls’ Day / The Day of the Dead – November 2nd. A quieter, more reflective day compared to Halloween’s fun.

Quirky Local Traditions

  • The Cheese-Rolling at Cooper’s Hill, Gloucestershire – Participants chase a wheel of cheese down a dangerously steep hill.
  • The Haxey Hood, Lincolnshire – A chaotic medieval-style «rugby» game played between villages on 6 January.
  • The Swan Upping on the River Thames – An annual census of the swan population, conducted by the Queen’s/King’s Swan Marker in traditional rowing skiffs.
  • The Notting Hill Carnival, London – A huge Caribbean-style street carnival held on the August Bank Holiday weekend.
