Renowned Russian People
Dmitri Mendeleev (1834–1907) was a Russian scientist and chemist. He is famous for creating the Periodic Table of chemical elements and organizing all the elements known at that time. An interesting fact about him is that he saw the complete table in a dream and left empty spaces for elements that had not yet been discovered.
Mikhail Lomonosov (1711–1765) was a scientist and poet, often described as a “universal man.” He made important discoveries in chemistry and physics and also wrote poetry. He helped found Moscow University. Interestingly, he walked about 1,200 kilometers from his village to Moscow to get an education, and the university is now named after him.
Ivan Pavlov (1849–1936) was a physiologist who studied reflexes. He became famous for his experiments with dogs, which showed that animals could learn to salivate at the sound of a bell. He won the Nobel Prize in 1904 for his research on digestion. Besides science, he enjoyed painting and gardening.
Sofia Kovalevskaya (1850–1891) was a pioneering female mathematician. She made important discoveries in mathematics and physics and became one of the most influential women in science. She was the first woman in Europe to receive a doctorate in mathematics and to become a university professor.
Marc Chagall (1887–1985) was a famous painter known for his dream-like and magical artworks. He often painted people and animals flying, as well as scenes from his childhood. Chagall was born in Russia, in what is now Belarus, but spent most of his life living and working in France.
Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) was a painter and is considered the father of abstract art. He was one of the first artists to create paintings without real objects, using only shapes, lines, and colors. An interesting fact is that he believed he could hear colors and see music, and he thought painting should be like music for the eyes.
Pyotr Tchaikovsky (1840–1893) was a composer who wrote some of the most famous classical music in the world. He is especially known for his ballets Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and Sleeping Beauty. His music for The Nutcracker is played all over the world during Christmas. Despite his fame, he was a very shy person.
Anna Pavlova (1881–1931) was one of the most famous ballerinas in history. She performed all over the world and helped make ballet popular internationally. She is best known for the dance The Dying Swan. A popular dessert called “Pavlova” is named after her.
